Why Should I Resolve to Attend Christian Formation in 2016?

Our church services are, of course, a central part of our Christian formation. We learn, grow, and go deeper by hearing the readings, singing words that draw us emotionally closer to God, saying prayers together, and participating in the Eucharist. But please consider taking an extra hour on Sunday mornings to expand the context surrounding your faith. The additional perspective you can acquire about living as a Christian disciple in the world—as part of a faith community—is key to our success as transmitters of the faith to those we encounter daily. These classes can also help pull us together and build unity and focus as we consider issues of social, political, historical, and cultural relevance to us all as we “celebrate God’s love with everyone.”

For children, certainly it is very important to teach them beyond what is learned in a weekly church service. Godly Play, Episcopal Children’s Curriculum, and Episcopal Youth Curriculum each provide the broader context necessary to understand the Bible readings each week and also teach theological reflection. I often think the whole parish should go to ECC!

So on January 10 and 17, Father Cristopher Robinson will start the 2016 Adult Christian Formation New Year with a presentation on “Going Global with God,” a book that will keep us grappling with our “reconciling mission in a world of difference.” Given our location, we will continue with learning and formation that is focused on the future and how St. Francis Episcopal Church can most effectively continue to be God’s people to our community.

January 24’s class will feature the head of the Refugee Clinic, Dr. Moshtagh R. Farokhi. Dr Farokhi and her team will present the mission of their clinic, share their experiences with refugees, and offer free services on that day for St. Francis parishioners!

January 31 through February 21, Brian Zook will lead a study of the book of Mark. Many of us have attended Brian’s offerings on various books of the Bible and know that he provides us all a chance to deeply consider the text and discuss its meaning from more angles than we ever knew. It is a great learning opportunity for all.
